Toronto Tenant Rent Savings

Did you receive a Christmas present from your landlord last year? Up to 1,000 Toronto tenants should have had their rent reduced from $100 - $1000. The City of Toronto eased tax burdens on select apartment buildings last fall. By law, a tenants rent is automatically reduced if the property taxes paid by the landlord are reduced.

How to know if you're landlord's apartment building had a tax reduction.

  • Your rent was reduced
  • You received a letter in the mail from the city of Toronto addressed to current tenant

Unfortunately, the letters sent out by the city looked like a form letter and were probably put in the recycling along with other junk mail. Unsure tenants are encouraged to check with their local councillor to see if their landlord's rental properties were affected by this tax reduction. The city is looking into a better system of notifying tenants.
